Phillystreetmag thanksgiving giveaway
My name is Tyjae Sullivan, creator and co-owner of the city’s new magazine, Philly Street Magazine. I hosted a Thanksgiving food and clothing giveaway for the homeless and less fortunate on Nov 23rd and 30th. With the help of my business partners, sponsor http://www.cwrphilly.com, family, friends, and volunteers, we fed an clothed 300 plus people over the course of those 2 days.
The experience was riveting. Helping people in need is something me and one of my brothers and business partners, Rasheen, always wanted to do. There were so many people without things needed for the winter such as jackets, hats, scarves, socks, and gloves. We provided food and clothes for ages 5 and up We fed and clothed whole families.
Not only did we set up shop at the park on Kensington and Tioga but we also walked the streets to feed and clothe people who were unaware of the event occurring. We also made sure anyone that walked past our event received hot food and clothes and winter accessories whether they were homeless or just in need of something we had to offer.
Some of the stories were heartbreaking some people hadn’t eaten in days. Some had no clothes or sneakers. Families were out on the street due to drug abuse or being terminated from their job. Veterans were out on the streets because of their experience in the military. We tend to judge these people unaware of what put them in this situation. I interviewed one of the homeless men and he told me that he was born in his situation. He’s never had a home; never been to school. He stated that he isn’t on drugs and never was. His mom was homeless and on drugs when she had him so he was homeless because of his mother’s decisions, not his own. Some people were giving drugs secretly by someone they believed they could trust which in turn got them hooked on drugs. Others admitted that they were homeless or less fortunate because of their own mistakes.
Being able to help these people really meant a lot to me because I’m all about my people and all about my community. That’s why I’m in business with my family and friends. There were people who hadn’t eaten hot food in a long time. We fed them pizza, chicken, rice, corn, fries, juices, waters, chips, warm coffee provided them with nonperishable food items, and much more. Also we had hygiene products for men and women. Another thing we made sure they had were blankets, sheets, coats, hats, gloves, and scarfs so that they could be prepared for the cold weather approaching.
I intend to host one of these giveaways every year. I’m not rich or anything, but I believe if you’re in a position to help someone you see in need, you should. This was just the start of something grand. Part 1 was an amazing turn out and part 2 next year will be bigger and better.
Thank you to everyone who volunteered, donated, promoted or help out in any kind of way. On behalf of me and the whole Phillystreetmag family we sincerely want to thank you guys for everything.
